#SoPhi | I’m A Gemini, I’m Crazy by @ImDesi

“What’s your sign?” is one of the most popular questions when people are in that “getting to know each other” phase. If you’re a Gemini, like a few of the other Sophi members and myself, everyone’s response is something along the lines of, “I ain’t messing with you, you crazy!” And then one of your sides says, “B*tch I might be!” and the other one of you says, “I’m not crazy, I’m just misunderstood.” Even though there might be some truth to that, is it really fair to assume we have someone figured out based on one minute tidbit of information that makes up the multidimensional person they are?

My interest in astrology began long ago, when I was probably around 12 years old. Recently it’s been one of my obsessions and it really irritates me that the purpose and messages of astrology gets so lost in translation. Astrology says that there is a direct relationship to an individual’s life and personality and where the sun, moon, and planets are positioned. People will hear a certain characteristic that is associated with their particular sign, but if it isn’t applicable to them, astrology must be a lie. Or if they hear a particular trait that is attributed to their sign, and it happens to be a negative trait, they will accept it and instead of working to improve it, justify it by saying, “blame it on my sign.” Instead of using horoscopes and astrology as guidelines, people assume that it’s to be used as a literal mandate for life and this is where the misunderstanding comes in. For example, one of the main characteristics of Geminis is being inconsistent. Are there Geminis that are consistent? Of course! All that means is that for some Geminis, it may be more of an area of struggle than others. Being aware that consistency could be a weakness can prepare you for a future event. Let’s say my horoscope for today says, “Gemini, today will be awesome. You will find money on the ground.” Does this mean I should walk around with my head hanging low expecting to find 4g’s in 5s and 5g’s in 1s in a rubber band on the ground? NO! First of all there are millions of Geminis in the world, you mean to tell me we’re all gonna find some money on the same day? Somebody lied. What this means is to simply be aware. It means don’t just spend the day in bed hoping that when you step your foot on the floor, money will magically appear. It means live life but pay attention because something could happen that would cause this event to occur. It may not even mean physical money, it could be a business card that leads to an investment or something later on down the lines which then leads to money. It could manifest in so many different ways but if your eyes aren’t peeled, you could miss it. The predictions or forecasts in astrology are always contingent upon the action you take, the choice you make, and the situation you align yourself with. It just offers a heads up on which areas may be best to focus on, but as with anything you should always use your own judgement. I find it foolish for a person’s astrological sign to be a deal breaker in a relationship. I’m not going to miss out on the man of my dreams just because astrology deems us as incompatible. I can learn him and learn to compromise and work to make it work. Though someone is a particular sign, there are so many other contributing factors in shaping people, you cannot possibly come to know everything about a person based on their sign.

Everyone I’ve ever met has been somewhat curious about astrology or expressed some interest in it. But few are willing to actually satisfy that curiosity. Thanks to me being a Gemini, curing my curiosity is what I do best. There is so much more to you than your sign. Actually, you have more than one sign. Your sun sign is determined by your birth date. This means this is where the sun was on the day you were born. This describes the characteristics that you are heavily influenced by, you when you are being your true self. My birthday is June 9th so Gemini is my sun sign. Then there is your moon sign, where the moon was when you were born. Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, your moon sign concerns your emotions and how you deal with them, who you are deep down inside. Then there’s your rising sign or ascendant, which deals with you physically. Your appearance, your image, and how you present yourself to the world. These are just a few of the basics. We all have so many layers to us that one sign will never adequately depict our whole selves. There’s so much more to astrology than your sign and horoscope just as there is so much more to you than your sign or horoscope. There are some direct correlations from what life has shown me and for those looking for guidance, astrology can be helpful. As just that though, a guide. Not an absolute. A guide on how to better know and express ourselves so that we can be happy. It can give the possibilities of tomorrow based on your actions today. At the end of the day it’s still up to you. Read, digest, let it marinate, and feel if it resonates. Do you believe there is some truth to astrology? Are you familiar with astrology beyond the daily horoscopes? Let’s discuss. You always have a choice. You can even choose to believe this post and astrology are both a bunch of bullsh*t because guess what?  I’m an emotionally detached, schizophrenic Gemini, I won’t give a f*ck either way!
