What exactly has President Obama done?
I see this question a ton on twitter and I wanted to answer this question for folks, because I think its important to know exactly what policies he has put into place and what policies he has TRIED to enact as well.
Let’s start with the Lilly Ledbetter bill, which guarantees equal pay for equal work for women. This was a bill that Pres Bush refused to sign and less than 20 congressional republicans supported. For the same work men did for a dollar, a woman made 23 cents less. So if your male counterpart made $100,000, you made $77,000 for the EXACT same job. Obama didn’t think it was fair for our mothers, daughters, wives, aunts, ect to be shortchanged, I don’t either. This bill fixed that.
Now lets discuss the stimulus package that helped saved our economy from a second great depression. Obama took office and we were losing over 750,000 jobs per month. What the stimulus bill consisted of was tax cuts for EVERY person/family that under $250,000 dollars. He also extended unemployment benefits for families hit by the economy shedding jobs. The last part of the stimulus package was used for job creation, public works projects, grants, federal loans and contracts. This helped save or create 3 million jobs. Again republicans overwhelmingly opposed this.
Obamacare, the big bad government takeover of our healthcare system. Never mind the heart and soul of the bill comes from the Heritage Foundation which is a WILDLY conservative think tank, and this is the SAME plane republicans tries to get Bill Clinton to support in 1995. What exactly did the Affordable Healthcare Act do? It said insurance companies could no longer discriminate against folks with pre-existing conditions, it also says children can stay on their parents health insurance until they turn 26. Mandates everyone who can AFFORD to carry health insurance buy insurance or face a fine. It also helps cover prostate screenings, breast screenings and other preventative healthcare measures.
Orchestrated the Auto industry bailout, the same auto industry that Mitt Romney said he would let go bankrupt. Think about America with no auto industry, the auto industry is directly responsible for over 8 million jobs, and supports 1 out of 8 EVERY American job. Not only did the auto bailout work, it has made the auto industry better and stronger than ever. They have added almost 200,000 jobs in that industry since Obama had the gumption to make sure it was not liquidated.
Just a few other things Obama has done since he has been in office, he doubled pell grants, he re-authorized the GI bill which supports our military personnel who seek to gain higher education, he doesn’t support turning social security into a voucher program. 30 straight months of private sector job growth. And he doesn’t hide his money in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland to avoid paying taxes.
