Movie Info: A critical hit and audience favorite out of the Sundance Film Festival, in DOPE, Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood of Inglewood California while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT. A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself.
Review/Opinion: I was expecting an over-hyped, middle of the road film. However, I can truly say ‘Dope’ was masterfully directed. In many instances, the urban story can either be cheesy or a classic. This film will stand the test of time. The character Malcolm has a figurative coming-of-age party where he hits multiple roads with forks in them. Roads where his friendships will be tested, his loyalty, his intellect, street smarts and even matters of the heart. I would actually pay to see ‘Dope’ again, right now. If you’re on the fence about seeing this movie, don’t be. Awesome choice to see casually or even for date night. Dope is, well…. DOPE!
